New Numberplates for Gauteng

NEW NUMBERPLATES FOR GAUTENG

The replacement schedule for existing number plates for motor vehicles registered in the Gauteng Province was published in the Gauteng Provincial Gazette No 265 on the 10 th of December 2009.

The new number plates will look similar to the old number plates except that the three letter three digit formate will be replaced with a two letter - two digit - two letter format followed by the Gauteng crest and the letters GP. The familiarly blue on white design will stay in use for all private vehicles while number plates for governmental vehicles will be red on white, personalised numbers will be green on white and the vehicles used for public transport will be black on white.

In a effort to reduce vehicle related crime the new plates will also include a 2-D barcode as well as a RFID chip. The RFID chip was introduced as a means of preventing illegally obtained plates from being attached to vehicles and for the use of chip readers on toll roads. The RFID chip can also ensure that speeding fines are allocated correctly.

All motor vehicles currently registered in the Province of Gauteng are allowed to continue using their existing number plates until it’s date of expiration. These expiration dates were publicised in the above mentioned Gauteng Provincial Gazette as follows:
